Prior
to the Revolutionary War, what is known as Yorktown today was a
part of the Manor of Cortlandt. At various times in its history
it was known as Gertrude's Borough, Crompond and then Hanover. In
1788, the State of New York officially established it as a town
known as York Town. Rich in history and centuries-old landmarks,
Yorktown was a train stop until 1958. The North County Trailway
now follows the former train line. With a number of lakes, Yorktown
became a vacation destination in the early 1900's. The resort hotels
and bungalow colonies built near lakes later became year-round residential
communities. Today, Yorktown is a vibrant community with excellent
public recreational facilities including the Mohansic public golf
course, Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park and Lake, Turkey Mountain
Park, Hunter Brook State Park, Hemlock Brook Preserve, Bald Mountain
Park, Downing Park, Teatown Lake Reservation and the county bike
trail.
